URGENT NEED!

ZaZa - A SAD Story
Critical Care - Vet Bill

6-14-09 - I had been trying to catch up on emails so was reading one of my rescue list emails. No one had posted anything for a couple of hours so I was getting caught up when I get a new message saying: Airport Frwy. Emergency Animal Hospital just had an owner bring in his three month old male Yorkie who they "think" ingested rat poisoning and the owner wants him to be euthanized because he doesn't have the money to treat him. Is there a group willing to take this precious baby? If so, please contact Linda immediately. And they gave a telephone number, so since I didn't think anyone else was online at that time and knew poisoning needs to be treated asap.

I called Linda, then I emailed Anne. I told Anne who posted the plea for help, My BOD might kill me, but I called and talked to Linda and told her that ABTR will take the puppy if he can be saved. I have told her that we will step up for the dog and authorized them to work on it. She is gonna do xrays, start the vitamin k and do some more bloodwork and call me back.

Then I sent an email to the BOD and Heidi and Kristi says they would have done the same thing so my BOD is not gonna kill me. I will just be making Heidi work harder to raise more funds. I asked Heidi can you do us up a fundable for little ZaZa? The lady at the vet said between $1000=2000 depending on what all they have to do for her. This is an emergency vet so I don't think they will be giving us a discount. I will get pix and updates as soon as I can.

Then later in the afternoon the vet called me and I posted another note about ZaZa which read: I just got off the phone with the Doctor at the Airport Freeway ER clinic in Euless. They close at 8 am in the morning so I gotta get a volunteer to get over there and pick her up around 7-7:30 and get her up towards me so I can get her into Dr. Shelly. The ER clinic said they would fax their records to her.

At this time, her PT is off the charts and her hematocrit is 12. They are giving her a blood transfusion now. Her clotting is not working well. She has blood/fluid building up around the lungs and since she is not clotting the vet doesn't want to try and drain it off like they normally would as she doesn't want to cause any more bleeding, so she is in an oxygen tent and being watched closely. They will drain if she gets to where she can't breathe, but only as a last resort since her clotting is not working right. :( She has had her vitamin K shots.

All we can do now is wait and see how she responds to her treatment. I am gonna call them this evening when I get back from my transport and see how she is doing. I did tell the vet that if she starts suffering and there is no likelyhood of her surviving to not let her suffer, but to do what she could to make her comfortable and hope that she responds.

I am asking you to say some prayers for this baby. After talking to the vets, I found out that the stupid idiot owners let her get into the rat poison A FEW DAYS AGO!!!! They only brought her to the ER because she was having diarrhea, not because she got into the rat poison!!! ARRRGGHHHH!!! . They told the vet they didn't think the rat poison would hurt her!!! JEEZ!!! WHAT STUPID IDIOTS!!! Why in the hell would they think something like that? HELLOOOOO..... POISON!!! In my opinion they don't deserve to have a dog!!! I sure feel sorry for any children that they have or might have in the future. JEEZ! The kids might not live too long either as they might not realize that poison of any type might hurt a kid. Please pray that this baby survives and does not suffer due to these totally ignorant people. If they had taken the dog to the ER VET as soon as the dog ate the poison, then it wouldn't have been so expensive to treat her. But due to them not taking her immediately to the vet when she ingested the poison, this little one has bleeding around the heart and lungs now and that is what is being addressed by the vets, not just poison.

Heidi is setting up a fundable page for her and I will post that when she sends it. The Emergency vet has estimated that itis gonna cost us about $1500-$2000 and then she has to go to a regular vet in the morning for monitoring and I don't know how long she will be there and that will run up a bill as well. We appreciate any help you can send our way.

If you want to pay directly to our vet send to:

Please Make a note it is for ABTR Yorkie puppy ZAZA -

6-15-09 - Hey everyone! Thank you all for all the prayers!!! ZaZa LIVED through the night!!! YEAH!!! I talked to 2 different vets yesterday. The one I talked to before I went to bed last night was talking about some kind of surgery if she couldn't be weaned off the oxygen. I told her to call me before she did a surgery cause the first vet that I could understand told me how dangerous that would be with her not clotting and I didn't understand the second vet real well as she had an accent that was hard for me to understand unfortunately. So I wasn't gonna give her blind permission to do whatever unless I understood what needed to be done a little better. I am kinda wierd that way. I like to understand what I am giving permission for before I just say yes. And I had already been told surgery should be a last resort by the other vet that I understood because of the clotting issues.

Anyway, they managed to wean her off the oxygen without having to do any surgery and she was ready to head out to Dr. Shelly's this morning. The bill just for the emergency clinic was $1362.36. They didn't cut us any breaks being a rescue group unfortunately. But the dog needed their care and they kept her alive and that is what matters. She had a blood transfusion, oxygen tent, a bunch of blood tests, xrays and meds. WE will have to fundraise and find some wonderful folks who will help us help her.

When I got there I was handed a cd with her xrays on it, a stack of paperwork with all her tests and results and monitoring stuff on there, a bag of iv stuff which I took out to the van and came back in to pick up the baby. This is the cutest little dog if you like little fuzzy babies with long noses. She and she is a she not a he like we were first told, was feeling better and ready to be cuddled. Gareth held her in his lap on the ride.

I got her to Dr. Shelly's and Dr. Boone was the vet in at the time. After she looked over all the paperwork and heard what all I told her about what happened, she told me they would put the IV (the little thingy was still in her arm) back on and watch her then take another blood test this afternoon to see how the clotting and other levels are. Right now we are on a wait and see how she responds deal. She said that they may do another xray in a day or so if she continues responding to see how her lungs and heart are doing. Her opinion was that the dog ate the poison almost a week ago to have the blood around the heart and lungs like she does. It is still not a sure thing that she will live, but... the chances are much better today than they were yesterday.

Keep those prayers coming and if you want to contribute a little something to her bill, THANK YOU!!! Thank you so much for your prayers for this little girl. I did ask Anne with Yorkie rescue if she could put this on the yorkie website so perhaps some yorkie folks would see and possibly donate to her vet care, I sure would appreciate it. Thanks.

6-16-09 - Hi all, I know you are anxiously awaiting news on ZaZa. I Talked to Dr. Boone and she says that Someting in the blood levels is back to normal which is excellent. sorry I was driving and couldn't hear her real well and don't know if it was the PT or the hematocrit or whatever but whatever it is, it is better than it was and that is GOOD!.

Dr. Boone wants to keep the IV fluids going on her for another couple of days as she started ZaZa on lasix to try and get the blood and fluids down from around her heart and lungs without doing any surgery or poking her with needles trying to drain them, but doesn't want to dehydrate her so wants those fluids going in. She won't have to be stuck again cause the ER VETS left the IV thing in her arm to minimize the number of times she would need to be stuck since she wasn't clotting well. ZaZa still needs to be monitored due to the blood around lungs and heart, but Dr. Boone is very optomistic that she was heading in the right direction and thinks she has turned the corner and is on the road to recovery. She said that ZaZa is feeling lots better today than she was yesterday and is like all puppies wanting to get some love and attention. She will probalby get some xrays and some other kind of test as well to monitor what is going on with her heart and lungs and clotting.

Dr. Boone says she is off tomorrow, but she will come in and check on ZaZa a couple of times and call me with an update. There are several other vets and lots of vet techs in the practice so it is not like she is not being monitored when Dr. Boone is not there. :) But I think Dr. Boone feels that she is the one who started caring for ZaZa so she wants to keep a personal eye on her. That is why I like Dr. Shelly's group, they are very caring about the dogs just like Dr. Cindy.

ZaZa will probalby get to come home in 2-3 days maybe if she continues to improve. YEAH!!!

Thank you all again for all the wonderful prayers for this little girl. We sure appreciate those prayers and the support you have given us. I only have the 2 pix for now, but will post more in a few days when we get her. Isn't she cute, even though she is sick?

6-26-09 - ZaZa was allowed to come home last week with meds and a slew of instructions from Dr. Boone. I have just been so busy rescuing that I haven't had time to update her page. She had to wear a cone for a day cause she still wasn't clotting well and had a bandage on her leg where the IV needle had gone in. She hated that thing, but boy did she look cute in it. Here are some pix of her in her little cone.

As you can see ZaZa is very hairy and that hair hid a bunch of matts down in her fur. But you sure could feel them when you were petting her and running your hands over her. She was cute all fuzzy, but... I like a nice clean not so fuzzy looking dog. Maybe that is why I like Bostons. Anyway, here are some pix showing what a little fuzzbucket she is as well as how small she is up against a normal sized Boston. She is an itty bitty girl.

ZaZa was feeling better on her regimen of Vitamin K and clavamox. The clavamox is because she is a little more suseptable to infection due to the rat poisoning and meds they had to give her to clear out the blood from around her heart and lungs. So I decided since she was looking so scruffy and had mats in her fur, that she needed to go to a groomer and have a nice haircut and spa day. This is the groomer I took her to:

Pet Spa
1425 Justin Road
Suite 850
Lewisville, TX 75077
phone: 972-317-6887

I like this groomer as he did a little fuzzy dog I pulled about 5 years ago and did a good job. When I called him and told him I had a little Yorkie and a Boston Terrier for him. HE REMEMBERED ME! He said "oh yes, you are the Boston rescue that sent me a Thank you card, I remember you." That made me feel good that he remembered me. He got me in fast too. I am so proud of the cut he did on Zaza. She was matted up cause she hadn't been groomed in a while by the ex owners. Nicky came out of his spa day smelling so good and I think he enjoyed his spa day. The wonderful groomer donated Nicky's grooming to ABTR. How nice is that? And ZaZa looks gorgeous! I recommend Pet Spa in Lewisville to anyone who has a fuzzy dog needing a cut. They even cut toenails for you without a groom for a fee. He cut my Momo and Squeeky's toenails for me. Here are some pix of ZaZa in her fancy new haircut. Ain't she BEAUTIFUL?

Oh and the groomer said she was a real nice dog that was very friendly and sociable without any fear or bad behaviors, so I guess she didn't turn into Cujo when he was grooming her like some dogs do. This is a precious puppy who just wants to be loved and needs all the normal puppy training and love that any other puppy will need when she is ready for adoption.

ZaZa still needs to be spayed and have her shots as she only had the set of shots that whoever bred her gave her IF they gave her any shots. WE will pull a heartworm test as well just to be sure she hasn't any heartworms. I am planning on getting her spayed next week and she should be ready to go to a new home after the 4th of July weekend. So... if you are interested in a little sweet fuzzy baby, then please put your app in soon. I almost forgot... since she is a puppy, our puppy fees apply. Her adoption fee is $400.

7-7-09
- ON 7/1 I Took ZaZa back to the vet, but haven't had time to put in an update on her until now. We got all her shots updated. Dr. Cindy pulled a complete blood count and did a clotting test as well as doing a heartworm test.

GOOD NEWS is ZaZa is heartworm negative in spite of not being on heartworm prevention and not having her shots done. BAD NEWS is she is still not clotting well enough for us to do a spay surgery on her. I ran out of vitamin K so Dr. Cindy prescribed some more for her.

Dr. Cindy recommends that we wait another 2 weeks and then test her again to make sure she is clotting well. I think that it would be very bad to not test her again and her clotting factors still not be right when we start the spay and have our little fuzzy ZaZa baby bleed to death because we were too impatient to wait until she was clotting well. So we added another $150 to her bill and still have the spay to go. We still need over $1000 donated to cover her vet bill. But whoever adopts this little one will love her and think she was very worth every penny we have spent.

ZaZa says she is perfectly fine and wants to get out and play with everyone, but due to clotting, I am not taking a chance with her and she is still being crated for her own safety. I want to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support for this little girl. Thank you. HUGS, Wanda

I know this is not a Boston Terrier, but... she is a dog that needed help in a hurry, so... we offered to help her when she needed it most. We have only succeeded in collecting about $600 in donations for her vetting, Won't you please consider pledging just $10 to help us pay for the treatment this poor puppy needed that her owners would not pay for? ABTR is committed to doing all we can for her, but as always our resources have been stretched thin so we need some help to give this little girl the help she needs. Her vetting has exceeded $1500 so far and she still needs to be spayed and have other vetting, so we're grateful for each and every contribution. Thank you.

ABTR is a 501c3 charitable organization and every penny you donate is tax-deductible.

As always, we at ABTR appreciate your continued support of our rescue efforts. Without your generosity and support, we could not have helped as many dogs as we have over the years. :) Thank you so very much. Wanda
