URGENT NEED!

Nicky - A NEGLECT Story
Critical Care - Vet Bill

5-20-09 - I had just said I was full and wasn't taking any more dogs with the dogs I have already committed to, but.. OH MY GOD!!! I HAVE TO TAKE THIS ONE. Please pray that infection hasn't gone systemic!! I got a call from Tammie and she said she got this dog and they had to cut the collar off him and she needed him out to a vet today! Jim is on his way to pick him up now. I am heading out to meet Jim and get this little guy to the vet asap. Thanks for your prayers.

Sorry I posted pix and ran, but needed to help the dog. I know you hear us griping about a lot of the shelters down here, but there are some good ones too. I want to take a minute and commend an excellent caring shelter. Tri City is just ONE of the really good DFW shelters with caring people who go the extra mile to help the dogs that would not make it out of a shelter environment without them. They actually CALL YOU when they have a dog you can help! THANK YOU TRI CITY!! I know you don't always hear when I say Thanks, but I want you to know that your caring and hard work for the animals is appreciated. THANK YOU!!!

When Tammie called me this morning and said she had a baby that had an embedded collar, needed to get out today and they just picked him up last night, I KNEW he was in bad shape. When she sent the pix, it was worse than my imagination. They took him to a vet this morning I think to get the collar cut off. The shelter sent some meds with him for his eye, a wash for his throat and clavamox. This shelter and its personnel do the best they can for the animals in their care and I really really do appreciate it. THANK YOU!!!

Anyway, met Jim who saved me hours of driving down and back as I called him and he said he would go get the boy and meet me! So I got him to Dr. Cindy asap! He was her first patient after lunch. THANK YOU JIM!!! YOU ARE A WONDERFUL VOLUNTEER AND I LOVE YOU!!!

This boy has 2 very bad eyes which might have to be removed (one of them looks like it is ready to rupture any minute), he is emaciated, he is weak, he is limping, he has horrible wounds all around his neck and his wound is badly infected and it smells like rot. He reeks really bad, poor baby and we stunk up the whole clinic. No one in the waiting room seemed to mind that we went first.

Dr. Cindy looked him over pretty good. she said that there is some granulation in one of the wounds so it is old and has been there a while. (probably why it is rotting and can you imagine the suffering this lil one went through?). She said that she would prefer us to give him some antibiotics for a few days before we tried to do any surgery cause the way he is right now, he would probalby die with that infection in there if we did the surgery for his eyes. If the eye bursts while we are trying to stablize him with antibiotics, we will deal with it then, (I have her cell number), but for now he needs heavy antibiotics to try and take control of the infection. There are sores, lumps and bumps all the way around the top of his neck as well as on the bottom of it and into his chest.. This baby won't be wearing a collar any time soon.

Dr. Cindy said the wounds were so infected and filled with necrotic tissue that she would have to take off half the skin on his neck to sew them up and as infected as they were that they would probably necrose (kill) the skin that she sewed together after she cleaned out the wound of all the infected tissue. . So it was best to use the antibiotics and see if that would get the infection out of there so she could do something and not kill the dog in the process of trying to help him. She sent me home with a heavy dose of baytril and the clavamox to give each 2 times a day. she also gave me the solution that she uses to wash out wounds and stuff on her surgery table. She said it should help with the smell and to wash out the dead tissue as well as being a topical something (I can't remember what she called it. I need to wash his neck out a couple of times a day.

His eyes are in bad shape and looking at them makes me cringe as they look like they hurt. I have both ointment and drops to put in his eyes 2 times a day. I will take him back on Friday and let her take a look at him again and see if this is helping him any and if so hopefully, by Tuesday he will have enough of the infection out of his system that we can do something for his eyes.

Dr. Cindy asked me what his name was and my mind was blank so I couldn't think of one single drink that we hadn't done already, so she said why don't you call him Nick and I said that is good, but lets call him Nicky. So Dr. Cindy named this boy and his name is Nicky. I got him home, got a nice crate fixed up with fluffy bed and a towel to cuddle in and set it up on the kitchen table so every time I walk in there I can check on him and he is up and away from all the hubbub of nosy bostons trying to get his food or mess with him.

I took him out of the crate, set him on the grass and he peed like a good boy. Then he limped over to me to be picked up. This is such a sweet boy even when he is suffering. He don't feel well at all, but he wanted to be close to a person he really didn't know and to have me love on him. So I picked him up, talked baby talk to him and brought him in for his wound wash out (first one I am counting for today). I gave him some water and boy was he thirsty. Lapped up almost the whole bowl. I was gonna be nice and put his pills in a nice 1/4 can of blue and put some salmon oil on it, but when I offered it to him, he just turned up his nose. So I had to shove 3 pills down his throat, the clavamox, the rimadyl (for pain) and the baytril. That boy has some strong jaws and let me tell you trying to hold his head without touching his eyes or around that neck wound and forcing them jaws open to stuff a pill down him was just a wee bit of a challenge. But I managed to get it done and he has been medicated. I Hope I don't have to do that every time and taht he will start eating the dog food and I can sneak the pills in there. I left the food in the crate with him just in case he wakes up peckish and wants a bite or 2. I will be up late tonight so I will give him his next dose around 1 am so he gets 2 doses before I go to bed tonight.

I want to thank all of your for your prayers for this little one. I am praying that the infection is not systemic and the antibiotics take effect so that he doesn't die from infection and we can address the other issues like his eyes, wounds and limp. Heidi will be doing a fund raiser to help raise funds for this boys care and I will post when she tells me what she has put together. Thank you all for caring about the dogs. These are the pix the shelter sent me.

UPDATE 5 -20 -09 - You are gonna get tired of this. But he is in such bad shape, I wanted to give those Nicky watchers a quick update. Anyway I watered the garden and came back inside and decided to offer more water to our little Nicky. HE drank some more and then after he finished drinking he ATE about 4 bites of dog food and then layed down to nap again. I am very encouraged. Not very exciting I know, but it was to me. :) I am hopeful. But not trying to over hope cause sometimes they get better before they die on me. Dr. Cindy said don't send out pix cause he is gonna look a lot worse before he gets better. I didn't tell her I already sent out pix.

UPDATE 5 -21 -09 AM - I got up to a wonderful surprise. Nicky had eaten the rest of the can of dog food I put in his bowl. :) YEAH!!! I think as the Rimadyl took his pain his appetite is getting better. This morning I took him out to potty and he peed like a good boy. NO poops yet. Then he kinda puttered around for a little bit and seemed to follow my voice as I was encouraging him. I think he is probably blind in both eyes or if he can see out of one, then all he can see is light and dark.

I got a couple more pix of him and I will fiddle with those later. You should be able to see how skinny he is in a couple of them. Then we went in and I washed out his wounds. Then I put his pills in hot dogs and he did NOT hesitate to snarf them right on down. ;) So the appetite is improving. I put another half can of Blue in his crate and he started eating right away and ate about half of that and then layed down to take another nap. Oh and he don't really like the eyedrops, but we manage.

This boy has a will to live, just infection was over coming him. He is responsive to my voice and he is crate trained as he doesn't try to get out. Once you put him in he seems to know that he is safe and to snuggle into the bed and snooze.

He is neutered so at one time, he might have had someone who really loved him and took care of him. Then life happened and he got with someone who very obviously didn't give a rats behind about him. Poor baby.! He is a pretty lil boy under the wounds and eyes. I am still praying that we got him in time to combat that nasty infection and that this is not one of those false get betters and then die on me situations. He is sleeping a lot due to the strong dose of antibiotics which are probably already helping with the infection too which is another reason he is sleeping so much besides just the rimadyl. It is hard to be hungry when you are in pain. Keep praying for our lil Nicky.

UPDATE 5 -21 -09 PM - I LOVE Nicky. He is so sweet and tolerant. He peed for me again. No poops yet, but he might not have eaten for many days before they picked him up cause he was so sick. So it will take time for it to work through his system. I will put some salmon oil in his food to make sure it comes out smoothly and doesn't constipate on him.

When I took him out tonight I had to feed the cats so I walked over to the barn 50-78 feet or so and was calling for the cats to come eat and he followed me over there by voice. He is still very wobbly and shakey on his feet and falls over frequently, but seems stronger than yesterday. He can't see cause I wave my fingers in front of his eyes and I get no response. Both eyes are really nasty and I am sure they are both gonna have to come out as soon as Dr. Cindy says that he has got the infection under control and it won't make him die on the table. He is still pawing at his eyes a bit as I think it is bothering him, but I got the drops in there regularly. I made sure he had his pain meds too as he isn't after it as much when the pain meds have kicked in.

Dr. Cindy was right, his neck wounds are looking a whole lot worse than they did yesterday because the dead stuff is sloughing off so the holes in the neck are even bigger, pinker and more disgusting and he has that big huge skin hunk hanging off there now as it was connected in a couple of places, but now it is only hanging by one side so it may come off by itself soon. Fur may never grow back over that section. But the icky yellowish brownish stuff don't seem as bad as it did. He is still smelly, but that stuff Dr. Cindy gave me sure helps on the smell after I wash out his wounds. He is so good about me squirting that stuff up there tonight.

Nicky must REALLY LOVE hot dogs as he snarfed those hot dogs with his pills down so fast tonight I thought he was gonna take fingers with them. He is getting used to the routine of me offering him water and taking him out for a potty and looking for his food. I left the whole can for him tonight to see if he will eat all of it. He has been getting 1/4 then 1/4 and the 1/2 of the can and I been feeding him every time I notice the bowl is empty. He just eats what he feels like eating sometimes a bite or 2 and then takes a lil nap and then wakes up to eat some more.

The Denton petsmart did not have the Blue venison formula that I had been feeding him so I got nature's recipe venison and rice formula. I don't like it as well. When I am out and about tomorrow fetching dogs, I may check the Lewisville Petsmart and see if they have it.

Anyway, I do think that he is feeling better and we might have a fighting chance with the infection now as he sure has perked up and is much more alert and interactive after 4 megadoses of antibiotics. Dr. Cindy was trying to kick that stuff in the butt and I think we are at least even with it and maybe tomorrow after a good nights sleep, Nicky may feel even better. So that is the Nicky update for now. I have to get up early in the morning and go pick up dogs so I may not update him again until tomorrow night.

UPDATE 5 -22 -09 - I took Nicky back to the vet today for a looksee. His neck is really looking better in one way, but also worse in a way. A huge hunk of rotting skin fell off so most of one side of his neck is open which looks worse. BUT.... it is pink on that side and starting to granulate instead of being yellowy brownish and icky oozying like the other side still is.

Dr. Cindy said that she could see veins pulsing inside so he was very lucky that we got him when we did as that embedded rope was about ready to do some major damage to the boy. But he probalby wouldn't have lived past the infection that he has with no medical care. As it is, we are getting more hopeful every hour that he improves. They are small improvements and don't look like he is getting better, but honestly they are improvements nonetheless. Dr. Cindy said that there was gonna be more skin that sloughed off in the next few days and so it was gonna look even worse before it got better and to be prepared as his whole throat might open up like the side of his neck. To continue with the mega dose of antibiotics, washing them out and since it has opened up so we can really get some meds up in there, she gave me an antibiotic puffer thing to puff his wounds with a couple of times a day after I get them washed out with the antiseptic stuff that I have been using on him. She said that I can start putting a kotex pad across his throat and hold it in place with a cut sock to help soak up the oozing, but he still needed to have air circulating up there so I would need to have it on for a while and then off for a while every day.

Dr. Cindy was pleased to see how much more alert he was than when she saw him the other day and was pleased he was peeing and had a poop today. She said both eyes will need to be removed and that really bad one may burst on me before he is well enough to do surgery, but it is still too soon to try and do a surgery on him with all the infection still lingering in his lil body. We don't want to kill him trying to save him. We will address the issues in the order that Dr. Cindy thinks is the most serious. WE have him on pain meds and I am putting drops in his eyes to try and help them feel better.

He weighs a whopping 14 lbs. AND HE BARKED TODAY!!! He had to go potty and he barked in his crate so I took him out and that is when he took his poop. I am so proud!!! I honestly think he is feeling better. Nicky is a sweet little guy and whoever did this to him should have the same thing done to them. Someone let him get in this shape and then turned him loose as he didn't have the strength to chew through a rope to escape the sadists who did this to him. If the shelter could find the owners, they would charge them with cruelty and neglect. But no tags, no microchip, no owners as he was picked up as a stray. This just makes me sick that this poor baby suffered for who knows how long before this happened. We did not look at teeth today, but we did worm him since he seems to be picking up energy with the regular feedings. Don't want the parasites to leech everything out of his system. So that is my update for today and I would just like to ask that you continue to pray for lil Nicky to improve and not be in pain.

UPDATE 5 -23 -09 - I know I am late on Nicky's update for today, but had a busy day picking up a new boy. Anyway, Nicky's appetite continues to improve as does his attitude. I fix his dinner and pills with hot dogs on the table in front of his crate while I am talking to him. Today, Nicky told me in no uncertain terms to hurry up and get his last nightly supper ready as i was opening the can and spooning it into his dish. He didn't want me to take time to put his pills in his hot dogs. HE WANTED THEM NOW!!! Bark "hurry" bark "hungry" bark "wheres the food I kin smell it?" bark "starving here" bark oh yum.....snort snuffle snoggle syummmm. He plowed into his dinner like he hadn't ate in years. IF I am not fast enough getting that dinner on the table, he may use all his energy in telling me all about it as he wobbled every time he barked, but he really wanted that dinner asap!

I think when he gets to feeling better, he is gonna be a lil pistol and tell me all about how he likes and wants everything.. :) He was hungry which is a good thing. HE needs that food to fuel his healing to build the white blood cells to combat the infection bugs in his bloodstream and to maintain the heat the fever generates that helps to combat the infection. :) He gets a bunch of small meals during the day so he is getting steady fuel for his body to help him fight the good fight against that nasty infection.

That boy is a good boy too as soon as his feet hit the grass he is ready to pee. Then he looks around a few steps and has found his spot. He pooped again tonight. He is having the runs, but as long as we are throwing all those antibiotics into his system and he has fever he will have the runs. Once we get the infection clear, his poops should firm up. Right now I am just thrilled he has a good appitite, a good attitude and is peeing and pooping regularly. AFter he poops he made an attempt to stand up on his hind legs and wave his paws at me to be picked up. He fell over before I could grab him, but I will be ready next time. He is steadily getting stronger and I am hoping that Tuesday when I take him in to see Dr. Cindy she will give me some good news that we have got that infection on the run.

I am still washing out the wounds and puffing the antibiotics in there. He is not real fond of that or having the drops in his eyes. But thank goodness he is snarfing down the hot dogs with his pain pills and antibiotics in them as I was not real gung ho about having to force them down his throat and trying not to touch his neck or eyes while opening them stubborn I ain't a gonna eat that nasty stuff jaws. I keep praying the eye don't rupture before we can get him into surgery cause I don't want to loose him because he had to have surgery with a raging infection going on. This boy wants to live and be loved and by god, we are gonna give him every chance we can. Please keep our lil Nicky in your thoughts and prayers that he will beat that infection and is not having too much pain. I always worry about that, but we got him on pain meds and I am putting those eye drops in to help the eyes. They don't look any better to me. I didn't get any pix today. I am sorry.

UPDATE 5 -24 -09 - This morning our boy was feeling his wheaties and told me all about how much he wanted his breakfast again. That boy's appetite has really picked up. This is a very good sign cause if they are hungry, then in my book they are improving. It is when they refuse to eat at all that they really worry me. He has gone outside and done his business so everything is still flowing smoothly. We are continuing to medicate, wash out his wounds and pray for him to get better. I honestly think it is working. This sweet Nicky boy is just precious. I have hope now that he is gonna make it and that one day I will find him the perfect person to love him and spoil him the rest of his life.

The wounds continue to look gross, but they are getting pinker and there seems to be less of the brownish yellowish gunk flowing from the one side that hasn't opened up yet. But that could be wishful thinking on my part. That side still looks pretty bad with gunk even though the hair covers up a lot of it. I imagine as we get the infection cleared out of there that part will open up too. But we will love him anyway and take good care of him. Eyes are medicated and he has a good attitude. I will update you again tomorrow unless he does something really cute or different. I will take some pix later today or tomorrow and post them. I will try to get pix of the lumps on the back of his neck that you can't see real well in the first photos, but you can feel them. They are kinda like a chain indention where the middle is raised up and the links are sunk in. I don't know if I can get good pix of that or not, but I will try. If I can't I won't post them.

Again, I would like to thank you all for your prayers and support for this little boy when he needs it the most. THANK YOU!

UPDATE 5 -25 -09 - Last night our lil Nicky actually managed to dig around and buried himself under his fluffy towel that is on his bed in the crate with him. I got a couple of pix. I know this isn't anything most folks would thrill about, but he is starting to feel good enough to act like a real Boston who likes to snuggle down in their beds and cover up. I am so happy. I really think that he is over the bump and the infection is dying out. I really think that I am not gonna have to worry myself sick that he is gonna die on me. I honestly think he is on the mend.

His eyes still look really nasty! That one is really sticking out there bad. I keep praying that it won't burst on me and so far so good. But I am keeping him crated except when I take him outside as I don't want nothing hurting his eyes or his owies. I think keeping him crated is helping him put on weight too as he feels heavier to me when I pick him up, but I guess that could be wishful thinking. I know he is putting away the groceries cause I am feeding him Blue and Nature's Recipe Venison and rice formula canned food and he is now eating a whole can when I feed him in the morning and evening. Plus I am still feeding him several small meals a day in addition to the whole can morning and night. So maybe on Tuesday he will have gained a pound or pound and a half. Since he is in the crate he can't run the food off. I am hopeful!

The side of his neck that hasn't dropped the skin isn't oozing nasty gunk as bad as it was and I can see PINK in the wound so I think it is getting better too. I know the other side really looks gross, but that open pink is much better than closed off infection like he had going on when we got him. I am still washing and puffing antibiotics in there. I tried to get a photo of the neck showing where he has those lumps and small sores around it from the rope or chain that the skin covered up, but it didn't come out too good.

You will be proud to know that today he peed without falling over too!!! AND he is walking much better. I got some pix of him pottying and determined to walk and doing it without falling over. I am so proud!!! My lil Nicky boy IS getting better. Your prayers are working, please keep praying that everything will continue to improve. Hugs to ALL of you wonderful people for being so interested in our Nicky. Thank you. OH and please scroll to bottom of the page to see Nicky's Angels.

UPDATE 5 -26 -09 - YEAH!!! Last night Nicky had his first solid poop even with taking mega doses of antibiotics. Those of you with dogs know a good poop is a very good thing and cause for celebration as that means their insides are starting to perk along like they should.

I took Nicky to see Dr. Cindy this morning. HE now weighs 14.9 lbs so he is gaining weight on the diet of canned Blue Venison formula I am feeding him. HE sure loves that stuff and demands his dinner and breakfast and as many snacks as he can talk me into. HE was NOT happy about no breakfast this morning just in case. He mumbled and muttered all while I was getting ready to head out to the vet about where was his breakfast and the service around here is terrible when there is a STARVING lil boy wanting some breakfast and there is no breakfast to be found.

After looking at his wounds, stating that they were looking good and taking his temperature,Dr. Cindy declared that Nicky was stable enough to undergo his first surgery to take care of the worst eye as taking them both at the same time would be too much surgery time and too hard for him in his condtion and she would be starting to put his neck back together today as well. So I left him for his surgery and left a couple of cans of food there, so that when he woke up and started demanding something to eat she would have what he was eating and it wouldn't mess up his digestion. Then I left and went and put the van in the shop. That took all day so I stopped back by the vet since she was on my way home to check on the boy.

When I walked in the door Wray said I think you can take everyone home. Dr. Cindy agreed. Beamish, Gin Rickey and Nicky were all ready to come home with me. She told me that Nicky had been back there talking ever since he woke up and he had already had a half a can of food to eat. He hushed up when I went back there and took him out of his crate. Dr. cindy and I chatted about him, while I held and petted on him so he would know I love him and be comforted.

GOOD NEWS!!! NICKY IS HEARTWORM NEGATIVE!!! Can you believe it? I am so happy that I don't have to have him go through that hard heartworm treatment.

MORE GOOD NEWS!!! Nicky's blood work was pretty much normal. He had a slightly elevated ALB level and that is something to do with liver and heart function, and it could also be due to the neglect he suffered, so we will watch that and test his blood for changes when we do the next surgery.

All I can say is, having that awful protruding about to bust any minute eye removed and stitched sure has put some of my worries to rest as I was terrified that eye was gonna burst before he could get well enough to have surgery. It looks so much better now. I know it has to feel better. The other eye still has the protrusion as you can see from the pix, but it was not any where close to being as bad as the left one.

Dr. Cindy said that there were lots of holes in his neck that you couldn't see because of the hair and she stitched as much as she could without tightening the skin so tight it would bust the stitches. She will have to do some more skin repairs under his throat when she does the other eye surgery for him. I am not sure when that will be, but will get more information in a few days.

I was so excited about all the good news about Beamish and Nicky with Nicky having his surgery that I totally forgot to ask her how old she thought he was. But I will try to remember next time I go see her.

I have taken a few pix of his eye before and after and pix of his stitches so you can see he looks like Frankendog, but he still has some open area under the neck that she will fix on his next surgery. He is draining out of that area I will wash it out with the anticeptic stuff she gave me. She got me 2 more bottles that came in today so I have plenty to keep him clean and washed out. That is it for today's update. I probalby won't update on him again until this weekend. I have a lot on my plate in the next few days.

UPDATE 5 - 29/30 - 09 - NICKY IS NOT DEAD!!! I have just been busy!!! HONEST!!! We got 5 new dogs since the last post 2 days ago and I have dealt with a bunch of other rescue and personal things since late Tuesday night when I posted. Nicky is not the only dog that I am dealing with unfortunately. It would be nice to only have one, but... they are coming in like there is no tomorrow. Sometimes there is just not enough hours in my day. I am getting a lot of emails asking about if Nicky died cause they didn't see any new posts. Nope, I promise you, he has not died, I just been running hard. He is alive and VERY VOCAL about it too. I am sorry that I worried you guys about him, but I hope my explanation of my days calms your worries. I am fixing to fill you in on him.

That eye must have been hurting really bad because after we had it removed, he really perked up and has gotten even fiestier. When I take him outside now, he does his business and then he is zooming around like he isn't gonna run into anything and then seems surprised when he hits something. He is fearless I am telling you! He wants to be picked up and loved on and will stand on his hind legs and wave them arms at you if he thinks you are anywhere near him.

I do need to tell you that the surgery and mega doses of antibiotics has got him with diarrhea again. When he pees he usually makes a tooting noise, but with the diarrhea sometimes he has a little leakage instead of just a tooting noise. So I been doing butt wiping duty since I got him out of the surgery. But I am hoping with the reduction of antibiotics that his poops will firm back up and he will be tooting away again and able to poop like normal without any leakage when he tried to let a little gas.

Nicky has also decided that he doesn't want to spend all his time in a crate snuggled up snoozing when there are people out there to give him love and attention. He tells me all about it too if he hears me walking by him. He has not messed his crate yet!!! I am so proud of him. He gets to fussing when he has to go as well as when he wants out. So I have been letting him out in the kitchen when we are eating so that none of the other dogs can bump him or hurt him without me being there to make sure he is ok. I discovered that feeding him with another dog being nosy about his good stuff, that he has no problems at all letting that other dog know ALL That food is his. So he gets fed in his crate, unless I am eating and he rears up on my leg to get a bite of what I am eating. I feed him off the fork otherwise my fingers might have missing bits since he can't see and is REAL eager about food. He would never bite me on purpose, but accidentally, he might get me trying to get the food.

Nicky is learning when I say watch it, he is gonna bump into something and he will change direction. You can't tell me this boy ain't smart. He has already figured out that he can follow the sound of my voice and get in the back door. Sometimes he manages to get behind the door and when I tell him to come around, he backs up and comes around the door and into the house. Like ALL special needs dogs I have had, Nicky says I can do it myself and is real proud that he can get around by himself. In time, he will be like all my blind dogs and have his areas mapped out and will get out there and run around without bumping into anything and visitors will come by and not even realize that he is blind, until he comes up close and they see he has no eyes.

That reminds me talked to Dr. Cindy and we will do his next surgery on the other eye and work some more on the wounds on his neck in 2 weeks from the last surgery. Nicky is doing well and is no longer in danger from the infection so Dr. Cindy has reduced his megadose of antibiotics to a normal dosage. He is still getting a pain pill due to his other eye and the surgery. I don't want him hurting. OH and Dr. Cindy guessed him at 5 years old. So he is not an old man and I been calling him old man. I bet he has been laughing at me.

You will never guess what happened? I got an email from the Police officer who cut the rope off his neck when she was called out to the scene. I thought the shelter sent him to the vet to do that, but they sent him to be seen about cause he was in such bad shape. Makes me think even more highly of Tri Cities. Anyway, the officer said I could share her email with you so you have a small amount of information about Nicky that we didn't have before. AND she may be interested in adopting him once he is well!!! How fantastic is that?

I have edited out her name, but This is the Officer's email QUOTE: Hi, my name is Officer , and I am a Police Officer with the Cedar Hill Police Department. I was the first responder to the scene where Nicky was found. A very loving couple noticed Nicky in the grass and knew he needed help so they called us and I was dispatched to his location. I found Nicky lying in the grass, licking his many wounds and just the sight of him broke my heart yet also filled it with love that I knew he wanted and needed. You see, dogs are my soul food. I just wanted to scoop him up and take him home with me but I knew he needed professional care immediately. I looked him over as best I could; I didn't want to move him or touch him too much because I could tell just by looking at him that he was miserable. He was emaciated and his eyes were blood red and obviously severely infected. The rope around his neck, which I could see had dug into his flesh, was too much for me to bear as I waited for our animal control officer to arrive on scene. So, I gently cut it off with a knife I carry on duty and to my amazement, this little guy responded and I swear he was relieved. A short while later, our animal control officer gently took Nicky into his vehicle and promised me Nicky would soon be in good, loving hands at our shelter.

I have to say that Nicky has been on my mind and heavy on my heart since that day. I was afraid to ask our animal control officer whether he had heard anything about Nicky because I knew his condition was not good. But, to my amazement and sheer joy, I was shown the link to your website where I have poured over every detail of his rescue, condition, and now his surgery. Yes, he looks like Frankendog :-) but I can not put into words how happy I am to know he is getting better!! And his face looks like the face of a dog who knows he's in good hands and that he is loved and safe now. I can't thank you enough for what you do, and please keep us updated on Nicky and the many other dogs you have there. I don't know if anyone has expressed an interest in adopting Nicky, but I want you to know I am very interested. I would love to give him the home and love he deserves. Dogs are truly amazing creatures. I can't imagine my life without them. (I have two Poodles whom I love dearly!) My family thinks I am a "dog whisperer" of sorts. All I know is that I connect with them, and they connect with me. Where ever Nicky ends up, I know now he will live the rest of his days as a treasured creature, thanks to you!

Sincerely,

Officer END OF QUOTE.

This just does my heart good to know that Nicky has garnered so much love and support from the moment he came into contact with those wonderful folks that called for help for him. This officer has my appreciation for doing Nicky the kindness of cutting that nasty rope off his neck. And I am grateful that she is considering adopting him when he is better.

Anyway, I haven't gotten any new pix as I have been busy as you know. I have a full weekend planned so I will probalby not update again until Monday or Tuesday. Just know that Nicky is full of vinegar and has no problems voicing his concerns, wants and anything else he can think of to me. HE is getting better by leaps and bounds considering how bad off he was. I contribute that to all the people who have been offering their prayers and support for him. Thank you all, he is over the infection and doing better, but he still has another surgery to go and more recouperation time. Thank you all again for all the prayers and support and I hope that this lil update helps to ease your worries about the boy. Once we get him past his next surgery and recooperation time, this boy will be ready to find someone who will love and spoil him rotten. So if you are interested in providing Nicky all the love and spoiling that he so richly deserves, then I suggest that you start filling out an adoption application so we can get you approved and as soon as he is ready to go to a new home, we can get him placed so he can start learning his home's layout and his person's routine so he can wrap you around his little paws like he has me. Hugs, Wanda

UPDATE 6 - 3 - 09 - Sorry I am late updating on NIcky but we have dogs incoming from all over the state it seems like. They are coming in faster than I can work out transports. And I still don't have the webpages updated for the dogs yet. I keep working on Nicky's update stuff instead when I get a free minute. I am gonna have to start saying no to incoming as I am full as a tick with the ones I have here and will be even fuller with the ones that I have committed to. Now on to NIcky:

Nicky is feeling so good that he is running and just having a good old time when we go outside after he takes care of his business. Nicky loves to be held and loved on. HE talks to me. This boy IS house trained there is no doubt about it. Nicky at some point in his life, he was someone's beloved baby. HE is still getting his etogesic for pain, eye drops in the remaining eye that will be taken out next week, and being fed his cans. That boy loves his cans of blue venison formula.

I have moved his crate from the top of the table onto a raised wooden doggie bed that will hold it up off the floor so the other Bostons won't pee on it (Dogs!). He gets so very excited when I am talking to him and fixing his dinner. HE rears up and just practically dances for his supper. HE follows me around to his crate and has learned to jump up in there to get his dinner. He comes out and knows there is a step down. HE is one smart cookie.

I almost forgot. Nicky went for a ride with me to pick up Colt 45. He sat with his behind on my leg and his front feet on the console and didn't move the whole way down. On the way back he rode across my lap and laid down. I took him out to show Mike and Diane how much better he was looking. They ooohhhed and ahhhhed over him and Nicky took it as his just due. Nicky even handed out a few kisses to Diane who told him he was looking so much better. She could see that he is filling out and doesn't look emaciated skinny any more. I think he can gain about another pound and then that is it. A pound on a little feller is a lot of weight.

Some of his stitches have stretched and his neck is so so as far as the skin part goes, but it is not infected any more I don't think. I am still giving him his antibiotic for infection. Dr. Cindy will work on that neck some more next week when she works on the other eye. When that comes out I bet he perks up even more. I LOVE THIS BOY!!! So far I have NOT gotten any applications for our Nicky. I was hoping I would have one in by now, since it is clear our Nicky is a little fighter and gonna make it. I think he may be ready to go to a new home in about a month or so. IF you are interested in adopting him, PLEASE put in your app now as I really would like to have a home waiting for him when he is ready to go otherwise, I might not be able to let him go.

I would also like to thank Karen from the Woofboard who sent Nicky the cutest little blue dog blankie and she made him a couple of little soft stretchy shirts that he could wear instead of a collar. She said they might even hold the pad in place. I realy appreciate the thought that went into this gift for our Nicky. Thank you!!!

And that is it for this Nicky update. I probalby won't update again until Sunday night as I have tons of stuff to do between now and then. Please keep saying prayers for our NIcky as he is on the upswing and does have another surgery to go yet. Thank you all for your prayers and support for our sweet Nicky. HUGS, Wanda

UPDATE 6 - 7 - 09 - Nicky will go in for his next eye surgery on Tuesday. Dr. Cindy will work some more on his neck wounds to close up any place that needs to be closed. He is still limping and the foot has swollen back up on the right front. Dr. Cindy looked at it and couldn't find anything embedded, but I am gonna ask her to look again while he is asleep so maybe she can probe it deeper and get the invisible pain thing hurting his tootsie out of there.

I thought you might like to know that the police officer that helped Nicky has sent me her application so there is someone who wants to love our boy and give him a good home once we get all his surgeries done and he is recovered enough for Dr. Cindy to let me adopt him out. Isn't that GREAT? My lil Nicky will have someone to love him that won't ever let this happen again and if someone tries it, his momma will arrest em. Sorry couldn't resist.

Once again I want to thank everyone who have said so many prayers and gave donations to help us help Nicky. Thank you. Without your generousity, ABTR could not help these wonderful dogs. As you can see by the pix as we progress with his care that Nicky might have been far gone when we got him, but this boy is glad to be alive and looking better. I can tell you he sure acts a lot spunkier and lively than he did when we first brought him home. So Nicky sure appreciates the support and prayers as much as I do. Here are some new pix of him in his new stretchy shirts that Karen made for him. I think they make him look cute. HE did his best to get them off as you can see by his rolling around photos.

UPDATE 6 - 11 - 09 - Nicky went in on Tuesday for his second eye removal surgery and more repairs to his neck as well as finding out what is going on with his little foot swelling up again. Somehow or another in the past Nicky stepped on something that went all the way through his foot from the pad to the top of his toe. The outside on the top and bottom healed up, but left a enclosed hole in his foot which would get infected and not drain out cause the holes closed up on the outside of the foot so his foot would swell up. When he was getting mega antibiotics it would go away. Then when the dosage was lowered it came back. Dr. Cindy said she opened it up and tried to clear all the something tissue out of it and hopefully that will fix it. IF not, he may have to have his toe amputated. But she said she was trying this first to see if it will fix his foot so we don't have to take off his toe. That poor baby just can't catch a break on owies.

I didn't have time to get back to the vet to pick him up on Tuesday as I was out doing rescue stuff so he overnighted. Firtst thing I see when I get up and get on the computer is a note from Dr. Cindy telling me that Nicky is doing fine and yapping his head off as he wants out of there, can I come get him? Naturally I went and got him even though it meant I still had to pick up another dog and then go back to the vet later in the day. Nicky was very happy to see me. We went right out to her excercise/potty yard for the dogs and he pottied like a good boy. He was happy to be heading home. Came in and acted like he hadn't been gone, just started demanding his supper.

I haven't gotten any new pix of the boy. She took out a bunch of stitches in the one eye and around his neck, but now he has new ones on his neck where it was stretched really thing and still open places. HE has a bandage around his lil foot where his owie was. His other eye is now gone and he just has stitches there. But I can already tell he is feeling MUCH much better than he was even with the horrible eye out. Eyes are painful things when they are ruptured up and nasty like his were and he was just so happy to be pain free he was going and going and going. We were trying to finish getting some trees planted out in our field before the storms hit last night and Nicky was outside with us. HE was just running all over the field (not a lot he can bump into and he stayed fairly close to us as we were talking.

Nicky has gained even more weight and is up to 18 lbs now. I think he is just about right on weight. He really is acting like he is feeling even better than he did after the first eye surgery. I got a lot of emails asking me if there was any way to save the eye. He was blind in it. It was very painful to him. Plus being blind if we managed to have saved the eye which was very doubtful per Dr. Cindy and managed to stop his pain from the eye when he bumped into things he could/would reinjure the eye in a second. Taking it out was in his best interest. Nicky seems to be much happier without the eyes and he doesn't care that he doesn't have any eyes since he couldn't see out of them anyway. This way no matter what he bumps into, he won't reinjure that eye. Humans have a much harder time with that no eye/blind handicap than dogs do.

So please keep up those prayers that Nicky's healing will continue and his foot will heal back right and no more sealing off on the outside to cause infections in a draining tract or whatever that was called. I don't want to have to amputate his toe. He has had enough surgeries. So please pray that his foot heals up ok. I will do what he needs, but I prefer that this surgery Dr. Cindy did on his foot will fix the problem.

Nicky got another box addressed to him from the Hartwig Bostons's known as the Arizona cowboys who sent him a new pawprint dog bed, a fleecy quilt, a couple of dog sweaters one in a fancy tuxedo design so Nicky can be stylin when he goes out this winter. Lots of toys and other chewy goodies as well as a sweet note from the boys. Nicky says Thank you so much for his goodies. Nicky has more angels I need to update, but will do that next week when I have a little more time. I just didn't want to leave you without an update on his surgery this week cause I have been running really hard and haven't had time to do a lot of stuff. I have a long transport tonight and tomorrow and then 3 possibly 4 long distance incoming dogs from 3 different directions on Sunday plus a small board meeting and have a friend coming in from Rhode Island on Sunday. I may not be able to update him again until next week. Hope this will be enough for now.

Here are some pix of Nicky with my WONDERFUL volunteer Jim who dropped everything and rushed to the shelter to pick Nicky up when I called him about it. His help let me get Nicky to the vet about 3 hours before I would have if I had to have driven all the way down to TriCity to pick him up all by myself. THANK YOU JIM!!!

UPDATE 6 - 26 - 09 - GREAT NEWS!!! Nicky got the last of his stitches out!!! Believe it or not, all those nasty gaping wounds are finally all closed up!!! YEAH!!! There are still some scabs, but the wounds themselves have closed over, thank goodness!!! PLUS His eyes no longer hurt him. Now all we have to do is watch his little foot to make sure that that the inside has healed and the outside has not sealed off a section that can be infected again. If that happens then he will have to have another surgery. So PRAY REAL HARD that Dr. Cindy got all the nasty stuff out that was causing his little foot to swell up and be infected.

Dr. Cindy says he is looking good as he is at the right weight for him at 18 lbs. His hair is so much softer and glossier than when he came in. Over time it should get even softer with the good food we are feeding him. Nicky is almost ready to go to his new home thanks to all the wonderful people and their prayers and their support for this poor little guy. Thank you all.

Since Dr. Cindy gave him a good to go report and I had to take ZaZa to the groomers to get her hair cut, Nicky went and got a nice medicated bath, his ears cleaned, and his toenails cut. This is the groomer I took him to:

Pet Spa
1425 Justin Road
Suite 850
Lewisville, TX 75077
phone: 972-317-6887

I like this groomer as he did a little fuzzy dog I pulled about 5 years ago and did a good job. When I called him and told him I had a little Yorkie and a Boston Terrier for him. HE REMEMBERED ME! He said "oh yes, you are the Boston rescue that sent me a Thank you card, I remember you." That made me feel good that he remembered me. He got me in fast too. I am so proud of the cut he did on Zaza the yorkie who was matted up cause she hadn't been groomed in a while by the ex owners. Nicky came out smelling so good. I think he enjoyed his spa day. The wonderful groomer donated Nicky's grooming to ABTR. How nice is that? And ZaZa looks gorgeous! I recommend Pet Spa in Lewisville to anyone who has a fuzzy dog needing a cut. They even cut toenails for you without a groom for a small fee. He cut my Boston's Momo and Squeeky's toenails for me.

I haven't been able to get hold of the police officer to do her home visit yet, but still trying. She may be working as she works strange hours and days. So I am hoping that everything will go great and her little Poodles will be ok with Nicky as that is the sticking point. Nicky doesn't like in your face dogs and he doesn't want them around his food. He is wonderful about everything else though.

I almost forgot. I got another box of goodies from Karen from the Woofboard. She made him a couple of cute light weight stretchy shirts and send another blankie to him. Unfortunately with the temps being 100 plus, I won't be putting anything on him to make him hot. But Thank you from Nicky and me, we do appreciate it. Nicky will have a whole wardrobe, some blankets a bed and some toys to go with him when he goes to his new home.

I got some pix of Nicky after his spa day with Mallory one of my Board member's daughter. Isn't he cute? LOOK at his neck!!! Isn't that wonderful? When I got him I never would have thought that neck would ever look that clean and smooth after the vet got them all stitched together. IT looks so good and Dr. Cindy says that most of the hair should grow back and it look almost normal one day.

Hopefully, my next update will be to tell you he has gone to his new home, but don't look for it until after the 4th of July. Now I have to go work up pages for ZaZa the poisoned yorkie, Brambles, the injured elbow boy from Dallas and worry about the little Brindle girl Junebug that got hit by a car while I wait on news from the vet about her condition.

UPDATE 7 - 7 - 09 - SAD NEWS! I took Nicky out to his police officer's house. She fell in love with him, but unfortunately her poodles did not! As I told you Nicky don't like other dogs in his space especially when food is around and my dogs have learned to get out of his way. Nicky stayed overnight with her, but he came back to me as her poodle LumLum got into it with Nicky and bit his lip. HIs officer didn't want Nicky to have to deal with getting injured by other dogs in his home.

This is the nice email that Nicky's police officer wrote me, QUOTE: Wanda: I just wanted to let you know I am so sorry Nicky didn't work out. Nicky is an absolute doll of a dog and a real sweetheart. My poodle, Lum Lum, just couldn't tolerate him.

Nicky, as I said, is an absolute doll and has a special place in my heart because I saw him at his worst like you did, but now I have seen him at his best. He looks SO much better than he did just a few short weeks ago. He's so pretty, he looks well-fed (not fat! :-)) and it is obvious he has thrived in your care. He's so gentle, so sweet, and just wants loads of love and affection. He walked around our house a lot last night and I watched how he learned where everything was. It was amazing to watch him mentally mapping everything out. It would not take him very long to figure out his new home. The only caution I can think to mention would be if there is another dog or dogs in his future home. I think it would be ideal for Nicky to be an only dog. For whatever reason(s), Nicky gets snappy when another dog comes near him. I was wondering if maybe because he can't see, he realizes he has to assert himself more....?

When my dogs were outside or away, Nicky laid at my feet or side and wanted love, love, love. I found a couple of magic spots on his back and tummy that, when I scratched them, Nicky melted. He also LOVES to be massaged. I massaged his hips, back and shoulders and he was in Heaven. I will miss his wet kisses and how he stands on his hind legs wanting to be picked up. And, yes, he LOVES to be carried around for as long as your arms can hold him. I so enjoyed his personality, too. Each Boston I encountered has such a distinct and amazing personality. They are amazing little dogs!

I SO hope and pray someone adopts this special little guy. He has been through a lot and deserves to be with someone who will love him and treat him like he deserves. I also MUST say that I have become a Boston Terrier LOVER. What an awesome breed! So gentle and so special.

There is a reason I came across Nicky, probably MANY reasons I came across Nicky. We're not done yet, and I just feel a Boston Terrier is in my future. I hope my donation was a help to you. Please keep in touch and I will keep an eye on your website. You never know there may be another Boston out there for us!! END OF QUOTE.

So as much as she would love to have Nicky with her current dogs it is not meant to be.

Nicky is now available for adoption and I am taking applications for him. Please be aware that he needs to either be an only dog or have submissive dogs that will get out of his space when he gets snappy at them. He is a great dog and needs a wonderful home to love him. Thank you. Wanda

Won't you please consider pledging just $10 to help this neglected/abused little guy get well? ABTR is committed to doing all we can for him, but our resources have been stretched enormously over the past year and we really need some help to give this little guy the chance he deserves. It is almost certain that his vetting will exceed $1000, so we're grateful for each and every contribution. Thank you.

We have taken in a puppy that has been hit by a car who has had severe damage to her pelvis, spine and femur, the surgery is going to be very expensive. Unfortunately, the donations for her surgery has not being going well. She will have this surgery if I have to borrow the money. I know her pictures do not show horrindous wounds like Nicky's but she is just as badly injured due to the inattention of her owners allowing her to escape and be hit by a car. Please take a look at Junebug's story and consider making a donation to help us help her as well. Thank you so much. HUGS, Wanda

ABTR is a 501c3 charitable organization and every penny you donate is tax-deductible.

As always, we at ABTR appreciate your continued support of our rescue efforts. Without your generosity and support, we could not have helped as many dogs as we have over the years. :) Thank you so very much. Wanda

If you would like to contribute to Nicky's care and vet bill, please feel free to use paypal for your payment or you can mail the payment to our vet with the notation "American Boston Terrier Rescue - Nicky" to:

Thank you for your support.

We at American Boston Terrier Rescue have no ongoing sponsers, subsidies, grants or other steady supporter paying for the vetting care of the rescue dogs. All vet bills, dog food and anything else the dogs need are paid for from donations, adoption donations and my own pocketbook. Any Donations are always appreciated.

ABTR is very grateful for the generous show of support for Nicky. Your prayers are so appreciated as well as the donations for his vet care from those we have listed below. All donations raised in excess of Nicky's expenses will be used for the care of many dogs in our rescue program such as Annie With cancer, Waldorf with demodex, the older dogs such as Andes, Gerties, Peeps, Old Fitzgerald, and Sadie the old Lady who will probalby never be adopted, but still need our love, vet care, dog food and Prayers. Thank you again for your donations and support.

These are Nicky's wonderful angels who have donated for his care as of

UPDATE 12 - 15 - 09 - FANTASTIC NEWS!!! We got a great app for our Nicky who passed all the checks we have in place for him. Sunday the 13th, our Nicky went to his forever home!!!

Nicky is now living in Corpus Cristi with his momma Cara, his Daddy Shawn, and his Boston brother Hugh. Corpus Cristi is a LONG way away from me. Cara and I did NOT want to fly Nicky even though he is very adaptable to new situations. Besides I wanted to meet Nicky's new folks face to face before I let my baby boy go anywhere! So they agreed to drive up to Temple to meet me to pick up Nicky. IT made for a long drive for both of us, but it was sooooo worth it!

We all got there about the same time, but they were so excited they were at my door before I could even get the door open. You could tell they were already gonna be real attached to the boy. Wait till you see the pix of their happy faces. I forgot to get a pix of their other dog Hugh who is almost as cute as my Harpo Baby Boy so he is really cute cause Harpo is the cutest Boston in the whole world to me!

When it came down to actually handing him over to them, I was having a bit of difficulty, but they seemed to understand that I had bonded with this incredible little guy who had such a will to live dispite having all those horrible wounds and infection racking his little body. I held him and we talked about him. They asked sensible questions about his care, how he interacted with other dogs and such. The longer I talked to them the better I felt about letting him go to live with them. They understand that it may take some time for Nicky and Hugh to become best buds and are willing to give Nicky the time it takes to feel safe and loved in his new home. They even have a Christmas stocking hung with goodies in it for him. Cara went shopping and bought the food Nicky has been on and lots of other things.

It was bittersweet seeing him go off with his new people on Sunday. I was very happy that Nicky was gonna have a new home that loves him for Christmas, but I was also sad that I was loosing a boy that I had put so much time, effort and my heart into. The boy never even looked back so I know that he is going to be fine.

I called and spoke to Cara several times to see how he was making the trip and how he was doing at her home. He traveled well and seems to be settling in great at his new home. She has already taken him to her vet for a hello visit and to give him Nicky's paperwork. Cara says Nicky slept in his crate and was real comfy having a place he knew he was safe in. He is eating well. She has taken him on several walks and is surprised at how friendly, outgoing, loving and how well he walks on a leash and is so eager for new experiences. My Nicky is a surviver and that Boston curiousity and tenacity is part of what saved him I do believe. Nicky is a very special dog and I think he now has very special parents who will see how wonderful he is every day for the rest of his life.

So... thank you all for your donations, prayers and well wishes for our NIcky. I am so excited that my Nicky has a new forever home for Christmas. Christmas wishes do come true!

As you can see Nicky, who now goes by the name Radar, is living the good life!
