Scroll down for most recent UPDATE 12 - 15 - 11 ![]() ABTR Parvo Baby Magnolia Maiden's Critical Care - Vet Bill American Boston Terrier Rescue has just taken custody of a 7 month old Boston Terrier
puppy who is critically ill. We have named this little girl Magnolia Maiden aka Mags. She has a *bad* case of parvo. She
needs our help.
11-10-11 - I got several notes about this little girl in the Garland shelter from people. So Martha went over to check on her. Seems Mags's previous owner dumper her in the shelter cause she didn't have time for her. Mags was in the shelter for about 10 days or so waiting to be evaluated by their vet. Once she she was evaluated on Thursday, Martha picked her up on Friday for ABTR to help find a good home for her who would never dump her in a shelter again. She acted fine on Friday and Saturday. Sunday Mags started throwing up, so Monday we took her into the vet. She was diagnosed with Parvo. At 8 am on Monday morning when I got her to the vet she was alert and responsive although sick at her stomach. By noon she had started going downhill and was very lethargic and could barely stand up. Mags had to be started on IV's and put into intensive care. The antinausea meds seemed like they had kicked in as she wasn't constantly puking like earlier in the day, but she just went down in her energy levels and responsiveness like someone had flipped a switch and dimmed her down. On Tuesday morning we were very concerned for her as she was very unresponsive laying on her side and had blood coming out of one nostril and that is NOT a normal occurance with parvo. Dr. Cindy upped her meds and care. We were dealing with the parvo before worrying about any secondary issues. Parvo is deadly very quickly, so that was the issue we needed to be concentrating on. Thankfully, Mags was holding her own on Tuesday evening. No Improvement, but no worse either. Thank God! Wednesday morning she had blood trickles from both nostrils. We are thinking that she had some thin weakened walls in some of the blood vessels in the nose and they burst due to the illness. She wasn't bleeding a lot, just a small trickle that stopped and didn't get any worse. By Wednesday afternoon after all the IV's, meds and intensive care, she was more alert. Dr. Cindy said if she continued to improve she would take out the IV's and try her on some soft food. Mags was over the hump hopefully. Mags still has some work to get well. She will be shedding parvo virus for another couple of weeks so she will be in isolation. Dr. Cindy says we won't spay her for about a month after she has gone home to give her body time to get healthy again. So it will probably be some time in December before she is ready to go to a new home. I will update more as time goes on. All I can say right now is that Mags has been one VERY sick little puppy and THANK GOD that ABTR picked her up from the shelter or she may not have made it as she might not have gotten taken to the vet the very first thing on Monday morning and as fast as she went down, I am sure she would have died. Now for my rant, a 7 month old puppy should NEVER have gotten parvo. That puppy should have already been fully immunized by having all her puppy shots by 3 months of age! ALL owners should take their puppies for their 6,8 and 12 week old puppy shots. Like any other vaccine Parvo shots do not take effect immediately. It takes 2 weeks for the immunity to build up and still needs a booster or 2 to reach full immunity. I always get 3 parvo shots for my personal dogs as having had a puppy go through this when I was a young girl, I never wanted to happen again. Being a rescue person now, it really upsets me when people take puppies with no shots or only one set of shots to the dog park, to petsmart and anywhere else there have been a lot of dogs. All of these places are where a puppy can contract parvo and any other contagious doggie disease very easily. My personal opinion is that puppies should be kept at home safe until after they have ALL 3 sets of puppy shots. Plus dumping a puppy with no shots at a dog pound is basically asking for something terrible to happen to the poor baby. Sometimes it is a GOOD thing that I don't know who these people are cause I really think I would punch their lights out. Mainly because I am so frustrated with their unfeeling ignorant actions towards the dogs they profess to love so much that they didn't bother to get basic health care and are dumping them in a hotbed of germs for their own good. Arrrggghhh!!! Sorry, but it sure felt good to get that off my chest.
![]() ![]() UPDATE 11 - 10 -11 - The top photo is the one on Friday when she looked pretty good. The next 2 are the Tuesday Morning when I remembered I had my cell phone with me and could take a couple of pix. The next ones are on Wednesday when she was feeling a little better at end of day. See the little leg come up for a belly rub? Still too sick to get up, but wanted a belly rub. what a sweet baby girl! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
UPDATE 12 - 15 -11 - Mags is doing well. I haven't had time to update her page until now. She went back in to be spayed last week. We did a blood clot test on her and that didn't act right so Dr. Cindy had me take her over to Refinery Road to have them run a blood clot panel on her before we would make the attempt to spay her. As always, we at ABTR appreciate your continued support of our rescue efforts. Without your generosity and support, we could not have helped as many dogs as we have over the years. :) Thank
you so very much.
