URGENT NEED!
Junebug - Puppy hit by a Car Surgical Care - Vet Bill
6-26-09 - I just got a call from
Dr. Shelly, some people had a puppy get run over by a car and took to the
vet. Didn't have the funds to pay for vet care so the Dr. had them sign
her over after she explained that she knew a nice lady who rescues Bostons
and knew I would take the dog and get her taken care of. I ok'd the bill
and that we would be responsible for it like I did for ZaZa.
So we now have a 6 month old brindle Boston female that has been hit by a
car, Dr. Shelly said she probalby has a broken pelvis, something with her
bladder as she is peeing blood, road rash and was shocky. Dr. Shelly said
there was not a lot she could do for her right now because she is shocky.
So she was gonna give her some pain and other meds and monitor her to see
how she does. She will get xrays and whatever else needs to be done as soon
as she can. I do not have pix, but will go by tomorrow and see if I can get
some.
So we got another urgent need one. I think I am getting a reputation for
being a sucker for the injured dogs. I wonder why? This is the 3rd urgent
needs, more than likely gonna be expensive one we have gotten in the last
5 weeks.
I will let you know more as soon as I do. :) We gotta come up with a name
for her. How about Calypso Baby, Desiree, Hanky Panky, Junebug,
Magnolia Maiden, Yuppidoo or Zowie?
JUNEBUG is the winner as I had more folks pick that one out of the choices.
We would appreciate any help you can send our way.

6-27-09 AM - Dr. Shelly called
this morning and she says the puppy is much more severely injured than
she originally thought. Her leg femorhead is something that needs to
be taken care of with surgery. Her pelvis is shattered in several places
and probalby needs a plate, but she is gonna consult with a specialist
to see if it might possibly heal on its own. (We can always hope!) And Junebug
she has a couple of spinal fractures down around tail area and she is not
quite sure how bad they are as there is lots of swelling so she can't really
do anything right now but give the stuff that reduces swelling and pain meds
until she can get better radiographs and send them to a specialist for evaluation.
Good news is that Dr. shelly expressed her bladder and there was no blood
in it. She may still have bladder and bowel control. We won't know until
some of the swelling goes down. Hopefully she will still retain use of her
back legs in spite of the fractures in her lower spine. So we are in a
kind of wait and see mode and she is doing what she can as she can with
the baby and keep her on pain meds so she is not suffering.
Just thought you would like to know her status. Please pray that she
is a miracle baby and can walk and have control of her bowels and
bladder. Those are my main worries.
6-27-09 PM - After I talked to Dr.
Shelly I went up to take some pix of the baby. She showed me Junebug's xrays
which were kinda blurry due to swelling in the tissues surrounding the bones. Her
pelvis is totally out of alignment looking like a diamond instead of a rectangle
and broken in a bunch of places. I could see 3 breaks in the spine in the lower
part of her back next to her tail. I am hoping that she will be able to poop
and pee without problems. The top of her femor is broken off and jammed up high.
Looks wierd on the xray. Junebug will definately need FHO surgery which is an
intricate surgery.
Please keep praying that will Junebug will be ok. Her xrays weren't the
greatest because she is swollen from being hit by a car back there where the
breaks are. Dr. Shelly says she reacts when she pinches her toes and pulls
her feet away so she has feeling in her feet and that is a VERY VERY GOOD sign.
She will send the radiographs off to the specialist on Monday for an expert
opinion on what will need to be done for her. Dr. Shelly is estimating it will
problaby cost about $3000+ to fix her with surgery and there are no guarantees.
This is a precious little puppy. Even though it hurts she did her damnedest to
turn around so she could get some attention. You can see in one pix where she
is dragging that back end that don't want to cooperate so she can see me without
craning her neck around backwards and get some pets. This one is definately
worth saving as even in pain she offered no aggression to Dr. Shelly when
she was being manipulated to see how bad the breaks work and xrayed. She has
a good temperament.
So without further ado, here is Junebugs pix.
Thank you all again for all the wonderful prayers for this little girl.
We sure appreciate those prayers and the support you have given us. I
only have these pix for now, but will post more in a few days when we get her.
Isn't she cute, even though she is hurting?
6-29-09 - Dr. Shelly called.
GOOD NEWS! Junebug is peeing and pooping fine. So the plumbing is still
working, now we just have to wait and see how much control she has. She is
trying hard to stand and move around and doesn't understand that she is hurt
and needs to not try so hard to move.
Dr. Shelly made an appointment for me with Dr. Dean and orthopedic Doctor down
in Pilot Point for Thursday morning. So she will have her Surgery on Thursday.
Now I just have to worry about how I am gonna come up with the money to pay him
when the surgery is done! Junebug needs the surgery, we will manage to come up
with the money somehow even if I have to beg and borrow.
Junebug will stay with Dr. Shelly on good drugs until Thursday morning when I am
to pick her up and take her straignt to Dr. Deans for her surgery. Please pray
that all will go well for my little girl and she will be able to walk and have
bladder and poop control.
As always, thank you so much for your prayers and support for my special dogs like
Junebug, ZaZa and Nicky.
7-2-09 - I couldn't sleep last night as I was
worried about Junebug's surgery and afraid I would oversleep and she would miss it. So
VERY Early this morning I went to pick
up Junebug at Dr. Shelly's office to transport her to Dr. Dean's the specialists office.
I got there a little early so had to wait until they opened. Then I got our girl and her
meds from the office staff. They were all very sweet to her and wished her luck with her
surgery.
Junebug was very happy to be getting some attention, but I put her in a crate for transport
so she would not hurt herself while I was driving. I got directions to get to Dr. Deans
and took off as I was supposed to have her there at 8:30 am. I was only about 5 minutes late.
I handed her off to a really nice nurse who cooed at her and told her what a beautiful girl
she was. I filled out the paperwork and signed that the Doctor could do what needed to be
done to her. Dr. Dean was a real nice Doctor. After I got everything done to get her
signed in, he came out introduced himself and shook my hand. Then he proceeded to explain
what he was gonna do to Junebug and what the 2 possible outcomes and costs were.
The way her pelvis is broken there was a possibility that it would affect the sciatic nerve.
Dr. Dean stated that the surgery itself could affect the sciatic nerve and that we wouldn't
know until after the surgery, if it did. I can't remember what he told me might be the outcome
of that issue. As he told me a lot and I have had a busy day with a couple of adoptions, vetting
other dogs etc. BUt I do know that he said he might be able to get away with just plating one
side of the pelvis and if so, that would be less expensive. But if not, depending on what he
found when he got in there, then he might have to plate the other side as well and it might
be more expensive. Dr. Dean stated that she couldn't have any puppies after this type of
surgery and should be spayed, but he didn't really think that would be an issue since I
was a rescue. I assured him she would be spayed as soon as he said she could be. He she would
at least 8-10 weeks to heal up from this surgery before we think about any other type of surgery.
Then, He told me that they would call me after the surgery was done and let me
know how she was doing.
I proceeded with my busy day and around 4 pm. They gave me a call and told me she was doing well,
but the damage was extensive enough to warrant plating both sides of the pelvis. It was a long
surgery for a little girl to take. I am to pick her up tomorrow around 11 am and get instructions
on her care and meds for her so she will not be in pain.
Please Pray that our little girl does really well with this surgery and heals up quickly as the
Doctor said she probably would since she is a young girl. I want to thank all of you for your prayers
and support for this little girl.
PLEASE DONATE!
Our Chip in has only raised $415 of the money we need for this baby's
surgery. Please help us help this girl by donating anything you can to help her. Thank you again.
Here are a couple of pix I took of her at Dr. Dean's this morning.
7-4-09 - I went by the vet and picked up Junebug.
This is a really nice orthopedic surgeon and facility. He does small animal orthopedics
as well as equine surgery. I recommend him to anyone who lives near Aubrey/Pilot Point
Area of Texas. The clinic is called:
Mustang Veterinary Surgical
Dr. Paul Dean
10222 FM 2931
Pilot Point, Texas 76258
Now I know what to tell you she had fixed. Right Ilial wing fracture severly displaced, left femoral
neck fracture, a plate on the ilial fracture, and femoral head and neck ostectomy on right side
was what he fixed for us. When he was showing me the xrays that he took that were less
blurry cause she wasn't as swollen up, he told me that they
fixed the weight bearing something I can't remember what he called it, but the bones that hold the
dog up. The other breaks behind that can be allowed to heal on their own. There was no damage to
the sciatic nerve. YEAH!!! So she had surgery for FHO and pelvic fracture repairs. He put in a plate
and screwed it in so it will hold steady with her moving and there shouldn't be any pins working
themselves out in the future to cause her problems.
I have a whole list of instructions for her care. She is to be on cage confinement ONLY for 6 weeks.
I have to carry her outside and use leash for potty and visiting with her. She is on Clavamox, tramadol
and meloxicam for pain and to prevent infection. She has to wear her cone until she gets her stitches out.
He was very firm about that. This is some major surgery and we don't want her to hurt herself by chewing
those stitches out. She has an appointment to go back to see Dr. Dean on the 15th of July for removal of
stitches and anything he thinks she might need at that time. After the 6 weeks of confinement is up I am
not sure how long the time will be before Dr. Dean says she can be spayed and ok to adopt out. She is gonna
be with us for several months recooperating.
When I got the bill, I was very happy that this first surgery wasn't as expensive as Dr.
Shelly's initial estimate. Dr. Dean gave us a discount because we are a rescue group. YEAH!!!
Instead of the $3000 plus I was expecting, with the discount he gave us, her surgery to fix all that was
only $1500. YEAH!!! I really do appreciate Dr. Dean being so kind to us on the bill as so many specialist
won't give a discount even if you are a rescue group. Dr. Dean told me that he would be happy to help us
with other orthopedic needs in the future. I believe we have finally found OUR bone doctor. I am gonna
give Dr. Cindy his card too. WE still need to fundraise for this bill as I used dog food money and adoption
donations from other dogs that need to go on their bills to cover this bill. I think our Chip In has only raised
about $435 so we need to raise a over $1000 to cover this bill and I still have Dr. Shelly's bill that I
haven't even seen yet, plus she still has to be spayed, have all her
shots and anything else that needs to be done before she is adoptable. So please continue to
DONATE to help us
on her vet bills.
We have fixed up a crate for Junebug in the cat room as the vet didn't recommend giving her shots for several
more weeks as they might cause problems in her healing process and with her being stressed from the injury and
surgery as
the shots might make her come down with the things I want to prevent with the shots. So.... separation from
the other dogs is a must.
Thank goodness! She is doing pretty good. Gareth is in there on the computer a lot
and he talks to her and pets her during the day so she doesn't feel like she is not part of the family. Junebug
says she don't want to be in the crate, she wants to be out and playing with everyone. But we are doing what the
doctor ordered for her own good, even though we really want to let her out and play with her. We will put some chew
toys in there for her to play with so she won't be totally bored.
As you can see in the pix below, her eyes look a lot happier and I honestly don't think she is feeling any pain as we are keeping
her pretty well medicated. She is sore enough that she only walks a couple of steps and smells around. She
did roll over once and I actually caught her in midroll with the camera. She is in the area where there are no other
dogs or anything to distract her. I will get her in a harness and in future you will see pix of her on her
leash and harness as she will start being a typical puppy as soon as she starts feeling better and we will have to
keep her from hurting herself by running around like a normal maniac playing Boston puppy.
I personally think that Dr. Dean did a really nice job on her suture lines on each side so you can hardly see them.
But if you look really close you can see them in the pix I took. She has stitches on both sides.
She don't like her cone, but she isn't fighting
it too bad. She is still a bit wobbly and walks really wierd, but... she is up walking and she is not leaking
pee and poop like I was worried she might do. I am very very pleased with how she is progressing so far thanks
to the wonderful care that Dr. Shelly, her staff, Dr. Dean and his staff have given her. Thank you EVERYONE
involved in Junebugs care and everyone who has donated to help pay her bills and everyone who has offered their
prayers for her to recover and be a whole normal puppy again. THANK YOU!
7-15-09 - Took Junebug to see Dr. Dean today. He was very pleased
with her progress. Said that instead of having to wait for 6 weeks, that we could probably spay her in 4. She is
ready to get her shots in 2 more weeks. Then we will get her spayed and she will be available for adoption. Although, she
has been living in the cat rooms with my husband and his cats and he is very attached to her. She is a sweet little
girl. Junebug will only be adopted to someone extra special, not someone looking for a puppy. Junebug has
to be loved for who she is, not because she is the age someone wants. We are not rushing her out the door to the first
person who puts in an app.

8-26-09 -
June bug is doing really well with her hip and leg, is running around and acts like any
normal puppy now. Her behind is still a bit spindly as she has to regain muscle mass back
there. And her hair is not fully back in from being shaved off, but we call her our little
skinny butt girl and she loves it.
Remember we put off having her shots because of her injuries. Well, she had all her
shots when we put her in for spay last week and boy howdy did she have a reaction to them. The reaction
was bad enough Dr. Cindy took her home with her that night to monitor her. So…
whoever adopts her will have to watch her next shots and give them to her one at a
time and be prepared for a reaction.
Now she has come down with a snotty nose and cough and wouldn't eat so lost some weight
which she didn't need to loose as she is a tiny lil thang anyway. She has been back
to the vet and now she is on baytril and a cough pill. Thank goodness she likes the vets
and they all make over her.
She is the sweetest thing. I do have an
application that we are working for her. She may have a 16 year old Boston sister
and a bunch of Papillons (pappy ons) as her siblings. The lady who has applied for
Junebug showed her other Boston in obedience and trains dogs, so… I think that our
lively little Junebug would have a really good fun filled and interesting life with
Mary. Junebug just wants to please and I think she would fit real well in this home.
I am going to do the
home visit on Sunday way down in Weatherford in the afternoon. I talked to Mary for
a good long time and she sounds like one of us.
As always, we at ABTR appreciate your continued support of our rescue efforts. Without your
generosity and support, we could not have helped as many dogs as we have over the years. :) Thank
you so very much.
