BURLESON COUNTY PUPPY
MILL 09
URGENT NEED!
American Boston Terrier Rescue has picked up 8 dogs from
a Puppymill in Burleson County, Texas. The dogs have NOT been starved, but have been neglected
physically as they have mouth (cleft lips, cleft Palates and malformations of the mouth), Bad
Patellas, and most of them have major eye issues. These poor dogs need our help.
Won't you please consider pledging just $10 to help these dogs get the vet care they need? ABTR is
committed to helping them. Our resources have been stretched greatly over the past year and we
need some help to give these dogs the chance they deserve. It is almost certain that their
vetting will be expensive, so we're grateful for each and every contribution. Thank you.
ABTR is a 501c3 charitable organization and every penny you donate is tax-deductible.
On January 29th, 2009 ABTR received a call from Sherry Smith with PAAWS, an all breed rescue group in Lyons, Texas and asked us to come and help with a puppy mill situation. Naturally, we responded immediately since ABTR's purpose is to rescue Bostons who are in dire need of our help. A Boxer rescue group also responded.
The situation we found these poor animals in was quite deplorable. We found cage after cage of all kinds of dogs: Poodles, Shih Tzus, Chi, Terriers, Boston Terriers and Boxers
One thing I can say for the man is that he DID FEED The dogs so they were not starving.
The dogs were turned over to PAAWS, who then turned them over to ABTR.
From a rescue standpoint, this was not an ideal situation for any dog to be in. The owner had severe health problems so a court order was signed to rescue the animals. The owner's relatives were in a hurry to get all the dogs out of there as soon as possible. The rescue group the relatives contacted for help is a small rescue group without a lot of resources or experience in puppymill situations, so I am sure they felt a lot of pressure to get the dogs out ASAP and were doing the best they could to get them out. Unfortunately, since breeders were there as well as rescue groups to get the dogs, we may see some of these dogs or their offspring in the future.

Originally there were 11 Bostons and 2 Boston mixes in the plea for help and I would have taken
them ALL as I told them in the first email asking for help the day before the phone call came in
asking me to come down and get them that day. The group in charge had "Adopted" out 3 of the
Bostons before I got there.
These poor little puppymill Bostons will need a lot of tender loving care as well as good health care. After all was said and done, we picked up 2 girls and 6 boys - The one and only male puppy is supposed to be a Boston Chi mix. I don't see it, but I didn't breed the dogs either. They did have some HUGE Chihuahuas there so he could be a Chi mix. All the adult Bostons have either eye issues or mouth issues maybe cleft lip/palate or bad patellas or a combination of them. One thing I can say about this Puppymiller guy is that he DID feed them so they are not starving like most of them we get from mills, thank goodness.
Since we are on alcoholic beverages themes right now for our naming, I decided to name these
babies after Champagnes. I believe they need a classy unique name all their own. So we now have
Bonnaire, Dom Perignon, Henriot, Louis Roederer, Phillipponnat, Pommery, Taittinger and Magnum.
Below are photos of : Magnum who has mouth and eye issues(left) and Bonnaire an
older girl with horrible patellas that may not be repairable(right)
Phillipponnat HW+ (left) and Dom Perignon an older male with a cleft lip and bad
patellas and tumors on his penile sheath. I honestly believe that Perry was someone's pet previous
to being in the puppy mill. (right)
Pommery has no tear production and will need expensive meds for her eyes to try and
start tear production. She also has some skin issues, maybe flea allergies (left) and Henriot the
frightened boy with bad eyes (right)
Louis Roederer, the puppy who probably doesn't have a lot wrong with him (left) and
Taittinger the sweet boy with either a undeveloped or injured and deflated right eye. (right)
This is just a short list of what we saw wrong with them when I dropped them at the vets office. I
will know more by Friday as I am rotating them through the vets for their vet work. All the
babies were covered in fleas and they have had a capstar and been frontlined. Several of them had
hair loss due to flea allergies. Their hair is coarse and will soften up as we feed them a good
kibble with salmon oil added to the mix for their skin.
None of them have ever been on a leash and boy was that fun trying to take pics and not let them
run away while they were fighting their leash. So they will all need obedience work by their new
adopter. Amazingly all of them except for Henriot are not terrified of people and are actually
fairly friendly and want to get loves. So they have potential with the right adopter who will
love them and give them the training that they need to become a member of the family.
