Vote for A Chance for Bliss

Please help A Chance for Bliss win this contest as they help very old horses, dogs, etc to have a loving place to live out their lives and they can use the money as feeding and caring for these animals is expensive as we all know. As they are a sanctuary only they depend upon donations so winning this Grant would help them tremendously.

Place your vote here for this wonderful animal sanctuary to receive a $50k grant from Pepsi. Remember once you sign-in, you need to click on the "vote for thisidea" button again or your vote won't get counted.

URGENT NEED!
Latest Update 7/29/10

ABSOLUT HUNK aka LUTIE
Warning Graphic Photos!

12/29/09 - I got an impassioned plea from Katie who lives in Harlingen, Texas and adopted our Karana from us years ago. Here is what she told me, QUOTE: Hi So I know I have not been on forever but I need help. I found a boston boy at the Harlingen shelter. He is not doing well at the shelter and they are high kill. He has little time left. He does have heartworms. Anyway I want to pull him. I need to get him out. He also has a gash on his side that needs to be treated. Not too deep and not too bad, I could get that fixed up ASAP. He is a little guy, 20 some pounds and needs to eat. Wanda can I pull him and will ABTR help to pay for the vet? I can pay for some of it but I can't afford all of it. Please Please call me I want to go get him today! END OF QUOTE.

So I go to petfinder to look him up and see if he is purebred Boston and see what they have to say about him. The shelter description gives no hint of anything wrong with him other than being heartworm positive. This is the shelter write up on him. QUOTE: Raider is a 25-pound, dignified-looking Boston Terrier. But don't be fooled by his serene gaze- he has the heart of a clown. He has the classic black and white Boston Terrier look. He seems to enjoy other dogs and wants to play like Bostons do, with lots of good-natured wrestling and jumping among friends. While heartworm positive, Raider is willing to provide comic relief for someone willing to provide a home and treatment. END OF QUOTE. This is the photo they had up on their website for him.

So I am thinking, "he sure is a purty boy and if she is willing to drive him up this way we will take him", as he is a good 12 hour drive from my house. I called the shelter and posted a plea for help on transport. Here is my note giving more info that I had gotten from the shelter in reference to this sweet boy, QUOTE - Some of you have probably seen Katie’s Post about the Boston in Harlingen on the ABTR list. Katie says she is willing to pull the dog. I haven’t talked to her yet as I wanted to get some ducks in a row first. I checked out petfinder and he is a purebred Boston so I am ok for us to pull the dog. But…. We have to get him up here from way the hell down there. I have already called the shelter to get the scoop on the dog and they are perfectly happy for us to pull the dog since he is heartworm positive. Frank the ACO said that usually the Bostons adopt out pretty fast, but with him being heartworm positive no one wants to commit to that so they were going to look for a rescue to take him which is why he is on petfinder as they know rescues peruse petfinder. He is not in immediate danger of being PTS since I have indicated that I am working on volunteers and transport.

His story is that someone was coming down from San Antonio to Harlingen over the xmas holidays and ½ way down when they were in Corpus Christi found this Boston. So instead of taking it to the shelter in Corpus Christi they took it to the shelter in Harlingen which was their destination. How in the world can someone find their dog if folks take it hours away to another town’s shelter? Jeez.

Frank the ACO said that Katie had come in and wanted to take the dog right then for us, but… they didn’t have anything on file for us. So I got someone who can pull the dog from the shelter, but I need help getting the dog from down there up to here. Does anyone have any contacts down that way that is willing to help transport a heartworm positive Boston Boy? Thanks. HUGS wanda

I forgot to mention he also told the dog had a gash on his front leg that needed to be seen by a vet. One of my wonderful volunteers named Elaine said she would be happy to help transport and between Katie driving him to San Antonio and Elaine's help with my other Texas corridor volunteers we would be able to get him up here, so I called the shelter, got the particulars and told them Katie would be pulling him for us and faxed our paperwork to them.

Katie went and picked our boy up and this is the next note she sent me (now remember Katie is NOT a rescuer who has seen a lot of the bad stuff that happens to dogs, she is just a wonderful adopter who has a big heart) QUOTE - Ok I got the boy and he is a doll! He is also a complete mess. His gash is very large but not at all deep. It is infected and smells. I have cleaned it out as best he would let me and slathered it with neosporen, he has been chewing and licking on it so he is in a T-shirt to keep it covered. He has ear mights I treated for that. He may also have an yeast infection in his ears. One of mine get yeast infections all the time so I am almost 100% that is what it is and I have given him treatment for that, and if it is not a yeast infection well then I treated for nothing. He has some cuts on his face looks like he was attacked. He also has scarring on his nose. My Bostons are trying to kill him and for those of you who do not know me that is total par for the course with mine. He is gated ofg in the kitchen and has had his bath. He is having dinner, a ton of water and has stuff to chew on. He is very happy and acting like a Boston. Hank (my mutt who loves every one) and he have played a bit and he seems to do very well with Hank. He has kissed Jerry (my husband) about a thousand times. I am going to send some pics in a min. END OF QUOTE. This is the pic she sent me.

Katie was very worried about Lutie even though she didn't realize the true extent of his infected gash and she and Elaine made arrangements to get him up to Elaine so he could get to the vet the very next day for which after the fact I am extremely GLAD!!! Elaine sent me a note before she met the boy and just saw the shelter photo asking, QUOTE: I need a name for the Harlingen boy at the vet tomorrow. Would Absolut Hunk be ok? He is a somewhat larger boy, so sweet, and will be an absolute hunk for some lucky adopter when he is well. End of quote. I agreed. So we tossed around what we would call him and settled on Lutie.

12/30/09 - Elaine was already committed to picking up the Killeen dog for us today, so she worked Lutie into her schedule. Here is the update she sent us. QUOTE - I left the Harlingen boy at the vet to be checked out while I went to Killeen. He is in pretty rough shape; the vet didn’t know if he had been dragged when hit by a car or if they were burns. They had to sedate him to debride all the skin that needed to be cleaned. He’s pretty raw on the entire right side. I’m attaching some photos the vet took during the procedure (don’t look if you have a weak stomach). He had a Rimadyl injection and is on tabs and antibiotics the rest of the time. He has a body wrap for now and has to go back to the vet on Saturday to have the wounds treated again and the bandages replaced. The vet says some daily therapy will be needed for the next week and he’s going to be very sore for some time. No apparent broken bones or internal trauma at this time. I have him fixed up in an X-pen in my office where it stays warmer for my daughter’s 20-year-old cat. At least he doesn’t have a temperature and the vet says he is a good candidate for full recovery, although he’s going to have some scarring. Apparently he’s only a couple of years old; his teeth are in good condition. So, given all that has happened to him and how he’s feeling, I don’t think he should be transported yet. Wanda, let me know your thoughts on this. END OF QUOTE

Based on what the shelter told me and the pix I had seen of the boy I was NOT prepared to see this. His face looks to me like it has the same infection stuff going on as well as scrapes and stuff, especially up next to the ear. He is on antibiotics so that should help. He may look even worse like Nicky did before he gets better, you never know if there is infection hiding up on his face and skin sloughs off. Naturally, I told Elaine, he needed to stay there until he is better after having to go through that at the vet and needing more intensive care from the vet that started his treatment. These are the photos she sent of the boy below.

Elaine has spent about $500 at her vet so far and did not get an estimate on what else it is going to cost for his care down there. So ABTR is asking anyone who might have a soft spot for a poor guy who has gone through who knows what before we got him and suffered who knows how long at the shelter to open their hearts and their wallets to help him get the care he needs to live a good long heathly life. You can click on the Boston with his hat in hand to donate via paypal or other ways to donate are listed below. Thank you so much for your help for this sweet boy.

Thank you so very much for your prayers and support for this sweet little feller.

We at American Boston Terrier Rescue have no ongoing sponsers, subsidies, grants or other steady supporter paying for the vetting care of the rescue dogs. All vet bills, dog food and anything else the dogs need are paid for from donations, adoption donations and my own pocketbook. Any Donations are always appreciated.

ABTR is very grateful for the your support. Your prayers are so appreciated as well as the donations for his vet care. All donations raised in excess of Lutie's expenses will be used for the care of the many dogs in our rescue program such as our elderly dogs like Andes, Gertie, Peeps, Old Fitzgerald, and Mr. Magoo the old Man Boxer who will probalby never be adopted, but still need our love, vet care, dog food and Prayers. Thank you again for your donations and support. You will NEVER know how much they are truely appreciated! hugs, Wanda

12/31/09 - Elaine's update on Lutie, QUOTE: Here are some photos of the hunk after his debridement. He’s pretty much solid bandages, but he’s taking this awfully well. Right now he’s laying over the Lorax toy that Katie sent with him, trying not to lie flat. Hopefully his meds will kick in and he can sleep the night through. Elaine End of Quote. These are the pix below and he looks much better all bandaged up.

As you can tell either 2009 was ending with a bang with us getting the Killeen boy, Harlingen boy, NRH girl and being called about the Monroe boy as well either that or 2010 is starting off with an explosion!

This was supposed to be my week off from running everywhere, but it never fails there are always emergencies or something I have to deal with. Yesterday I got a emergency call about a female that had folks interested in adopting her until the shelter took her to the vet cause she was coughing and was told she either had severe kennel cough or a hole in her trachea. Then the potential adopters backed out which is a good thing cause the first time she got sick they probalby would have dumped her back at the shelter like a lot of them do. Can you tell I am tired? So I drove down there in the rain and picked her up. I think she has kennel cough, but will have the vet check her out more in depth.

Then today on the holiday, I have been working on this webpage all day and I got an email about a mange baby down in Louisana that needs help. It NEVER ends. Arrghhhh!!! We will help her too.

But I do have to put out a plea for donations as unfortunately due to the economy this past year, our Christmas donations were very slim so we are stretched thin. So we sure appreciate any tax deductable donations you want to send our way to help with these new babies.

I will keep you updated on Lutie as I know more. Next update will probabably be on Sunday or Monday.

1/1/10 - Elaine's update - Our boy is moving around more this morning. I checked on him at 4 AM and he was standing by the bedroom door. He peed buckets so I’m sure he slept better after that. He hasn’t eaten the canned food I mixed with chicken broth so I’m going to cook some chicken to mix with rice until his appetite comes back. He does take his meds in pill pockets or canned food. Now he is sitting up in the X-pen but looking a little drowsy. I can rub his head while I’m on the computer. Poor guy has a bad case of kennel cough on top of all his skin problems. I can’t wait to get him back to the vet tomorrow to see how the wounds are healing.

1/2/10- - Here are a couple of photos of Lutie’s last bandage change on Saturday. These are Elaine's messages about him, QUOTE: Lutie is back from having his bandages changed and seems more interested in the world around him, but still moving slowly. He now has cough medicine and a new antibiotic which should help ease the kennel cough. Our boy is sitting quietly on his bed beside me at the computer. He’s eating the boiled chicken but is a little bit leery of any that I try to feed him by hand (the bit with the bad-tasting Tramadol didn’t make it past his lips and he’s been suspicious ever since). I asked the vet tech to get some photos of the dressing change, but since my vet wasn’t there today, I’m not sure the message got through. Anyway, we’ll have some more next week. The scrapes on his hip seem to be healing nicely; hope the rest of him is healing as well. More update later.

I’m loading the car with crates, towels, and toys in readiness to meet Brooke later today with JR (Jamaican Rumshaker) and Tiger (Tiger Jack). Hope the trip to Wanda’s goes well. More later.

Elaine

1/5/09 - Elaine's update - He's getting better every day. When we go out to potty he now trots instead of wobbling. I can't wait until he can really play. He's apparently only a couple of years old. When he gets rid of the coughing and respiratory crud as well as the bandages he should be a lot of fun. I’ll probably post something every day when we get back from the vet. (Wanda says don't expect me to update the webpage every day! IT will be every few days.)

Here’s the day’s update on Lutie from Elaine's vet Dr. Bouloy - QUOTE: Your "boy" appears to be making good progress. His wounds are l ooking better and scabs continue to slough off with healthy underlying tissue. He is a very tolerant patient and does well with wound cleaning and hydrotherapy. Let's see him back tomorrow.END OF QUOTE.

He’s going every day for hydrotherapy and new wrappings; he gets a new color of vet wrap every day. Photo #5 shows how spiffy he looks with his new “outfit”. He managed to destuff his transport bed on the way home, and wanted to play with the neighbor’s dogs when we went out to potty. You can see from the vet’s notes that he is coming along nicely.

1/14/10 - Elaine's update - Here are the latest photos for Lutie. As you can see, he is healing very well, and should have lots of new hair growing in soon. He may have a couple of scarred areas where the wounds were too deep for the hair to regrow, but he’s looking much better. No more dressings or hydrotherapy, just the Aloe vera gel a couple of times a day. His digestion is still on the mend as well, but he sure loves his chicken and rice. The E-collar doesn’t slow him down at all. He will still have to wear it for a while since he immediately starts licking his side if I take it off. All your prayers and good vet care must be working; he’s going to be ready for neutering pretty soon, poor boy. In the meantime, he’s a real love bug.
Elaine
PS. I want this guy to find a great home; he's really proving he deserves one. So far he hasn't shown a single bad habit.

Wanda's note - we are treating what needed to be treated first, all the normal vetting we do will be done once the side is healed up and looking better. We will pull heartworm tests, etc. and treat whatever else needs treated as we find out what is going on with the boy as far as worms etc. Thanks to the daily hydrotherapy and Elaine's wonderful care with all the prayers our supporters have been sending his way, Lutie is doing very well. I want to thank you all that have sent donations as well as your prayers. Thank you!!!
Hugs,
Wanda

1/19/10 - Jim's update - Gang, While picking up Markie (Maker's Mark) today in Hillsboro, Elaine brought Lutie (Absolut Hunk) along to show how well his wounds are healing. He was such a boingy boy and would have loved to play if we all had the time, but he did have fun trying to wrestle his Fido Fleece to the ground. Here are the latest Lutie pix.
Jim

1/20/10 - Elaine's update - Lutie is an easy keeper; one of the most laid back guys you'll ever meet, a late sleeper but willing to stretch and get on with the day if you have to get up early. Never whines even when spending hours by himself. Lots of BT kisses. Has the cutest little lope when out for a walk, loose leash. And now his playful side is coming out; it's so exciting seeing him blossom. Can't wait until he can get out and play with the other dogs. No pressure, just want to keep everyone updated.
Elaine

2/2/10 - Elaine's update - Wanda, Lutie is doing so well I think he is ready for transport whenever you have room for him. I know he is ready to be out and about with other dogs. And he’s certainly well enough for the little nip and tuck surgery so he can be adopted. Now that the scabs are gone and the skin is healing, it appears that it must have been an electrical burn. There is a continuous parallel line down his side with offshoots at an angle that look it was some kind of electrical fencing or something else electrically charged.
Elaine

5/23/10 - Wanda's update - Lutie is ready to adopt!!! So if anyone is interested in adopting him, please put in your application.

I got so busy with other things these past few months that I haven't updated Lutie's page in a while. HE was transported up to me back in February. I kept up with the watching him heal. He is looking good and getting along pretty well with most of the dogs here. HE does NOT like my Boxer Teddy, so we keep them separated. He is a good boy, house trained and doesn't mess his crate. Lutie will watch out the window and let me know if anything is amiss outside, but is not a bark at the wind kinda dog, just one that lets you know if something is going on that you might need to look at.

Lutie still carries his scars and probalby will for life. All they do is give him character and don't mar his Boston good looks. He has a great personality as you can see by Elaine and Jim's praise of the boy. About the only thing I can say negative about Lutie is that he don't like my Boxer Boy Teddy and he wants to chase the cats.

So... sweet Lutie is looking for someone to love. Are you that person?

7/29/10 - I haven't had any interest from anyone in adopting Lutie down here. My friend Roie with Friends of the Homeless Animals in the northeast has offered to take him into her group and see if they can find a home for him up there. So, Lutie is on his way to the Northeast today. IF you are interested in adopting this dog, please contact FOHA at:

Providence, RI 02906
(401) 234-4499
friendsoha@yahoo.com
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Lutie's medical care. WE appreciate you. Hugs, Wanda
