The Legacy - Author Unknown

When humans die,
they make a will
To leave their homes
and all they have
to those they love.
I, too, would make a will
if I could write.
To some poor wistful, lonely stray
I leave my happy home,
My dish, my cosy bed,
my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well loved lap,
the gentle stroking hand,
the loving voice,
The place I made in someone's heart,
The love that at the last could help me to
a peaceful painless end
Held in loving arms.
If I should die, Oh do not say,
"No more a pet I'll have,
to grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out some lonely, unloved dog
And give my place to him.
This is the legacy I leave behind -
'tis all I have to give.

Do I Go Home Today - Sandi Thompson

My family brought me home cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me and smiled at me, and said I was full of charm.
They played with me and laughed with me, they showered me with toys.
I sure do love my family especially the girls and boys.
The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats.
They even let me sleep with them all snuggled in the sheets.
I used to go for walks, often several times a day.
They even fought to hold my leash, I'm very proud to say.
These are things I'll never forget a cherished memory.
I now live in a shelter without my family.
They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe.
But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.
The kids and I would grab a rag for hours we would tug.
So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bathroom rug.
They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside.
This I did not understand although I tried and tried.
The walks stopped, one by one; they said they hadn't time.
I wish that I could change things, I wish I knew my crime.
My life became so lonely, in the back yard on a chain.
I barked and barked all day long to keep from going insane.
So they brought me to the shelter but were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused an allergy, and then, kissed me goodbye.
If I'd only had some classes, as a little pup
I wouldn't have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up.
"You only have one day left," I heard the worker say.
Does this mean a second chance? Do I go home today?

Who are we?

We are a small, dedicated group of Boston Terrier-loving volunteers based in North Texas who stay busy rescuing, training, transporting, vetting, coordinating and fundraising. All for the love of our chosen breed, the Boston Terrier.

All Bostons that come into ABTR are fully vetted, heartworm tested and treated if positive, spayed/neutered and lived with to ensure a good fit into a new home. We never turn away a Boston in need as long as we have an available space.

ALL Bostons deserve a loving home. We accept all Bostons, regardless of age or health. (We will not accept dogs that exhibit human or dog aggression.)

Please note that the adoption process begins with an adoption application. Incomplete apps will not be considered.

We are not a shelter and do not have visiting hours. All our Bostons are fostered in loving private homes.

All adoptions require an adoption donation.

Payment options include cash, money order, cashiers check or paypal.

ABTR is a 501(c)3 non-profit rescue organization. All donations are applied to caring for the Boston Terriers in our rescue group.

Mission Statement

We are an all-volunteer; non-profit group dedicated to the health and well being of all Boston Terriers. Our mission and main objective is to vet and responsibly re-home unwanted animals with a thorough pre-screening adoption program that includes checking vet and personal references as well as a home visit. Secondary objectives include pet education and decreasing the number of purebred animals being born with our policy of all dogs are spayed/neutered before adoption and educating our adopters on the importance of spay/neuter. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every Boston Terrier has the chance to live the life they deserve.

We mainly rescue Purebred Boston Terriers, but do accept Boston Terrier mixes plus any purebred dogs and cats from animal control and owner surrenders when space is available. At this time we do not have a shelter so all our animals are in foster care. All adoption fees and donated money is applied towards the costs of vetting, caring for and maintaining the animals and our rescue efforts. There is no salary to pay, as we are all volunteers. We test all our animals for heartworm, lyme and erlichia. We immunize (Rabies, Bordatella, DA2LPPC) and sterilize all the animals. We stress keeping dogs indoors and not chained up. We have made it mandatory to spay/neuter ALL animals prior to adoption. Our animals are on COMFORTIS flea control to make certain as possible they go to their new home flea free. They are also given monthly heartworm preventive. All animals are dewormed.

We try to help those Bostons who will be euthanized at the shelter before owner surrenders because it is not their fault they end up on death row. We do accept ALL Boston Terriers no matter how old or what shape they are in. All Bostons deserve a loving home. However, we do not accept human aggressive dogs. We drive and pick up dogs all over North, East and West Texas, Southern Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Secondarily we try to educate pet owners to deal with any problems that may arise in conjunction with being a pet owner. We do have an email list for our adopters to get information as well as participating in a monthly Public Service Announcement advertisement in the Dallas Morning News with the occasional ad in the Fort Worth Telegram, as money is available. Our immediate future goal is to have a Van to transport animals from Animal Control or wherever they need to be picked up if owner surrendered to the vet and to their new homes.

American Boston Terrier Rescue realizes the importance of homes for elderly and special needs Bostons who are not adoptable to the average pet home. We are assessing the development of a program to provide long term care for elderly Bostons whose owners have passed away and for special needs Bostons who need more care than the average pet owner is able to provide. At this time, it is still in the discussion stages only.
